Korean History 4. Incheon Landing Operation (General Douglas MacArthur)

Looking at Korea’s modern history, there were many situations in which life had to be risked.

This was the case for 35 years when Japan occupied Korea. And on June 25, 1950, the Korean War broke out. Countless people were sacrificed in this ideological war, and foreign (United States and United Nations) armies helped us.

Three days after the war, South Korea was occupied by the capital city of Seoul. Not only that, but only very small areas of the south, including Busan, were left. If occupied there, South Korea would become a communist country like Vietnam is now. Democracy and freedom were in danger of annihilation.

United Nations coalition forces had participated in the war for South Korea. Among them, General Douglas MacArthur of the United States launched the Incheon Landing Operation in September 1950. On September 28, UN forces recaptured the capital city of Seoul.

Incheon was an area where many people opposed the landing operation due to the large difference between the tides and the rough terrain. However, General MacArthur expected the coastal boundaries of Incheon to be lax, and the prediction hit the mark.

By boldly landing on the waist of the Republic of Korea, he was able to take away the capital Seoul and protect the Republic of Korea. General MacArthur sailed into the sea and bravely broke through the enemy lines like Admiral Yi Sun-sin.

All wars, including World War II and the Korean War, should not take place. But the war eventually took place, and numerous sacrifices followed.

In the Korean War, a total of 5 million victims were reported. This was because it was a modern war in which tanks came and went and numerous bullets came and went.

I was discharged from the Korean Marine Corps. But I’m sure I’ll hesitate if someone tells me to abandon everything right now and join a war in a country other than our country. That is why we have so far appreciated the courage of 1950.

South Korea is a country devastated after the war. Not only that, but before the war, it had been ruled by Japan for 35 years, shaking the soul of the country. Such a country has now become the 12th largest country in the world’s GDP.

And this is why we have so far formed a strong alliance with the United States. Even many countries that dislike the United States must understand this kind of history of Korea. Korea is trying to maintain good relations with all countries.

After the Korean War, the South and the North were divided. But one day we will be united just like Germany. Then we can travel by train from Seoul to Paris. No, to london.

I pray earnestly that there will never be such a terrible war again.

한국의 근대사를 살펴보면 목숨(생명)을 걸어야 하는 상황들이 많았다.

일본이 한국을 점령했던 35년간이 그랬다. 그리고 1950년 6월 25일에 한국전쟁이 일어났다. 수많은 사람이 이 이념 전쟁에 희생되었고, 외국(미국과 유엔군)의 군대가 우리를 도왔다.

전쟁 3일 만에 남한은 수도 서울을 점령당하였었다. 그뿐만 아니라 우리에게 남은 지역은 부산을 비롯한 남쪽의 아주 작은 지역만 남았었다. 그곳까지 점령이 되면, 남한은 지금의 베트남처럼 공산주의 국가가 될 상황이었다. 민주주의와 자유는 전멸당할 위기의 상황이었다.

유엔의 연합군들이 남한을 위해 전쟁에 참여했었다. 그중에 미국의 더글러스 맥아더 장군이 1950년 9월 인천상륙작전을 실시하였다. 9월 28일에 유엔군은 수도 서울을 탈환했다.

인천은 당시 조수간만의 차가 크고, 지형이 험해 수많은 사람이 상륙작전에 반대하던 지역이었다. 하지만 맥아더 장군은 인천의 해안경계가 허술할 것으로 예상했고, 그 예측은 적중하였다.

대한민국의 허리 부분에서 과감하게 상륙을 감행함으로 수도 서울을 빼앗고 대한민국을 지킬 수 있었다. 맥아더 장군은 바다를 타고 들어와 이순신장군처럼 용맹하게 적진을 돌파하였다.

세계 2차대전, 한국전쟁을 비롯한 모든 전쟁은 일어나서는 안 되는 것이다. 하지만 전쟁은 결국 일어났고, 수많은 희생이 따랐다.

한국전쟁에서는 희생자가 총 500만 명이었다고 한다. 탱크가 오가고, 수많은 총탄이 오가는 근대 전쟁이었기 때문이다.

대한민국의 3번째 도시인 인천. 국제공항이 있는 도시이다. 이곳에서는 인천상륙작전 기념관을 비롯해 그때의 기억을 환기시키는 많은 건축이 있다.

2020년. 대한민국에도 미국과 미국인을 싫어하는 사람들이 있다. 아마도, 정치적인 상황 때문으로 보인다.

하지만 기본적으로 우리는 1950년 9월, 더글러스 맥아더 장군의 용맹함을 기억한다. 그리고 그때부터 지금까지 다른 나라에 와서 목숨을 걸고 싸워준 수많은 유엔군 참전용사에게 감사하고 있다.

나는 대한민국 해병대를 제대하였다. 그러나 나는 누군가가 지금 당장 모든 것을 버리고, 우리나라가 아닌 다른 나라의 전쟁에 참전하라고 하면 망설일 것이 분명하다. 그렇기의 1950년의 용기를 우리는 지금까지 감사하고 있다.

대한민국은 전쟁 후에 폐허가 된 나라이다. 그뿐만 아니라, 전쟁 전에는 35년간 일본의 지배를 받아 나라의 영혼까지 흔들렸었다. 그런 나라가 지금은 세계 GDP 순위 12위의 국가가 되었다.

그 당시 해외의 참전용사들이 없었다면, 자유 민주주의 대한민국은 지금 없을 것이다. BTS도 없었고, 오스카 상을 받은 ‘기생충’도 없었을 것이다. 왜냐하면, 자유가 없이 그런 명작들이 나올 수 없기 때문이다.

참전용사들은, 이렇게 폐허에서 발전한 한국을 보면 참 놀랍게 생각할 것이다.

그리고 이것이 지금까지 미국과 강한 동맹을 형성하고 있는 이유이다. 미국을 미워하는 많은 나라도 이런 한국의 역사에 대해서는 이해해야만 한다. 한국은 모든 나라와 좋은 관계를 유지하려고 노력하는 중이다.

한국전쟁 후에 남과 북은 분단되었다. 하지만 우리는 언젠가는 꼭 독일처럼 통일될 것이다. 그렇게 되면 우리는 서울에서 파리까지 열차를 타고 이동할 수 있다. 아니, 런던까지.

다시는 이렇게 끔찍한 전쟁이 일어나지 않기를 간절히 기도한다.
